Developed after intensive consultation with the local ethnic communities within Pollokshields, the Hidden Garden is the first ‘peace garden’ created to serve the public. This project exhibits many artistic statements including complex timber, metal and masonry features.

Activities

  • Complicated hard and soft landscaping forms have been created to reflect the ethnic origin of the design.
  • Himalayan and Asian cultivars have been planted in contrast to native British species, to express the partnership that exists within the local communities.

Outcome

NVA is an art-funded organisation, specialising in one-off sustainable projects and in partnership with us at Land Engineering, we have delivered this project on time and surpassing all expectations.

Future training opportunities arose during the maintenance period. These involved the recruitment of candidates from ethnic communities and a vocational training programme to teach them construction and maintenance skills. This has given the candidates the prospect of full-time employment as assistant gardeners at the Hidden Garden, ensuring the continuing development and sustainability of this project.

Major accolades received:

  • Civic Trust Award
  • Dynamic Places Award
  • British Association of Landscape Industries Award
  • Surf Award
  • Scottish Design Award
