The Summerford site had been occupied historically by a number of potentially contaminating industries, including chemical works, iron works, munitions store, pre-cast concrete works and a spoil heap. Our task was to resolve issues involving the two main aspects of the site – the bing area where wastes had been placed to form a large mound and the lower grassland area.
Activities
-
Repairing and, where necessary, upgrading the drainage network.
Capping of heavy metal contamination.
-
Design and installation of a groundwater treatment system to reduce levels of dissolved heavy metal contamination.
-
Measuring and monitoring the residual impact of controlled waters on the adjacent watercourse.
-
Extensive landscaping of the bing area, including footpath installation, fencing and planting.
-
Maintenance of the site for a one-year period.
Outcome
We successfully produced the desired objective of protecting humans from harmful contact with contaminated fill materials, coupled with reducing the risk of heavy metal pollution of controlled waters.
