St Andrew Square Gardens had been privately owned by the surrounding property owners for over 200 years. The Gardens had fallen into disrepair in recent years and were rarely used. In 2007, the City of Edinburgh Council established a 50-year lease of the Square and put plans in place to preserve the green and tranquil space while providing greater access to the public. We were delighted at Land Engineering to have been awarded Phase One of the works.

Activities

  • While respecting the traditional design of the garden, we worked on new additions to complement the Square. These included two new entrance gates, curved footpaths in natural stone paving linking the new entrances, a reflective pool and a small café pavilion structure.
  • With the Melville Monument remaining the focal point of the Square, towering 41 metres above it, we replaced the stone setting around the base with complementary sandstone.
  • We renewed the lightning protection system and installed feature lighting to bathe the monument in subtle light when darkness falls.
Planting and turfing works completed the scheme.

Outcome

In March 2008, the Gardens were opened to the public for the first time in generations.

Working in liaison with environmental consultants Gillespies and infrastructure experts Parsons Brinckerhoff, we have created an oasis in the city centre that has proved immediately popular with both visitors and those who work nearby.
