Land Engineering was appointed to construct the natural stone paving around the new position for the Doulton Fountain, located in front of the Peoples’ Palace in Glasgow Green. The design incorporated a variety of materials, which formed a large range of shapes, textures and colour.
Activities
- Glasgow City Council’s architectural department drew up the complex design for the external landscaping, while the structural department focused on the concrete under-building to support the fountain.
- Our works involved the full reconstruction of pedestrian areas around the new development.
- We reconstructed and realigned roads and footways leading up to this prestigious monument.
- The external surfacing materials included 12,000m2 of tarmac, 900m2 of Addagrip wearing course, 1,800m2 of new Burlington Slate and over 5,000m of kerbs including granite sett trims, second-hand whin kerbs and Verdie Ardesie granite kerb units.
Outcome
Throughout the works, we maintained exacting controls on noise, vibration and dust. This was because of the proximity of the works to the Peoples’ Palace and the Winter Garden, with these attractions remaining open during the construction work.
The project was performed as planned, to the satisfaction of the City Council.
