Land Engineering was appointed to reconstruct the world renowned Royal Mile, involving rebuilding the existing carriageway in granite setts. The project entailed, for the first time, the issue of a full performance specification by the City of Edinburgh Council.
Activities
- Our works involved lifting the existing setted carriageway, laying a temporary road, cleaning the setts (granite cobbles) and reconstructing a rigid pavement.
- The pavement was made up of ‘CBGM 2’ polyfibre reinforced concrete and a Sika Tojan sett construction.
- Automatic bollards, fixed granite bollards and new pedestrian crossings were also installed.
- Bulk silos were used for storage and direct mixers for the bedding and grouting materials.
- All sett laying was carried out beneath inflatable structures, protecting the works from the inclement weather during the winter period.
Outcome
During the project, two Capital Skills trainees were employed and given basic safety and construction training. Other staff received dumper and telehandler training, as well as instruction in the techniques being used.
By undertaking quality development panels before starting construction on site, we were able to optimise the construction techniques and design to meet the precise performance specification of our client. This delivered significant value engineering savings in time and cost.
