Burnhill Open Space is a public park in Rutherglen, South Lanarkshire. Constructed on upfilled ground, probably a former tip, the park was contaminated with heavy metals, with a particular area demarked by Chromium VI contamination.
Activities
- As there was no problem with ground water movement below surface level, our remediation procedures were confined to the prevention of chromium contaminated water rising to the surface.
- This was achieved by stripping the uncontaminated topsoil for re-use, placing a capilliary break layer of clean stone and re-soiling with the stripped topsoil.
- As an added precaution, all new cut-off and outfall drains were laid within an impermeable liner, to prevent ingress of potentially contaminated water.
- Three natural grass football pitches were constructed on the remediated area with a full drainage and irrigation system.
- An extensive network of paths was constructed throughout the site, complete with bitmac surfacing and lighting.
Outcome
At Land Engineering, we adopted a partnership approach to the contract, which enabled savings generated from contractor redesigned elements to be utilised to provide for additional pathworks and new fencing around the sports centre.
